July 4, 1971 – Koko, a majestic female gorilla, was born at the San Francisco Zoo. She is famously known as the sign- language gorilla. Koko is said to understand and perform over a thousand signs! Her name, “Koko,” is said to mean “fire-flower child,” which amazingly relates to the 4th of July!
